Rainy day skin Care Tips

by nkechi @ Bare Skin Naturals

5 TOP SKINCARE TIPS FOR RAINY DAYS It’s the rainy season again in this part of the world and oh how we love the rains… Here are a few ways to take care of your skin during the rainy days: 1. If you get wet, always remember to wash your face if you can or use a natural non alcohol based toner to wipe your face. Remember that due to high level of environmental pollution , you cannot be too sure of the quality of rain water. Besides rain water can also have dissolved dust particle or other soluble gasses in it. 2. The atmosphere is relatively humid, so your skin can stay fresh and hydrated with a light cream or lotion rich in humectants like glycerine, urea, sodium PCA, Hyualuronic acid etc 3.You can afford to skip heavy occlusive creams which form a barrier on the skin surface to prevent the loss of water from the skin during this weather as rate of evaporation of moisture from the skin at this time is very low. 4. Always protect your feet from stagnant pools of rain water or puddles which are very prevalent at this time and if you must, take care to protect your feet with a pair of water proof shoes, bags or rain boots. 5. Don’t forget to wear your sunscreen, just because you don’t see the sun … doesn’t mean its not there, besides sunscreens protect you from UVA rays which are emitted even during cloudy or non sunny days and are chief culprits when it comes to skin aging. So there enjoy the rainy days simply because ,… your skin loves it…

Why switch to an all natural skincare regime?

Essential Oils have been effectively used in beauty and body treatments for centuries. Face and body treatments that are made from 100% natural oils are different to run-of-the-mill commercial or synthetic products in that they contain no nasty chemicals, parabens, alcohol or artificial preservatives. Chemical based beauty products tend to disrupt the normal pH level..

5 reasons why you need to make your own baby skincare products

by nkechi @ Bare Skin Naturals

I remember after the birth of my last child, going through baby product aisle of shops  and having my head literally swelling from reading all the ingredient list in the many skincare products meant for use on babies. I soon realised that out of the whole lot, there were only a few I felt were worth spending money on and even fewer that I could confidently slather all over my baby’s delicate skin. This got me interested in making products for my baby, and that was the beginning of my learning how to make baby care products. Here below I share from my experience 5 reasons why you should make your own baby skin care products. 5 Reasons why you should make your own baby skincare products. 1, Saves you lots of money. Making your own skincare products saves you a lot of money. Consider for instance making a healing balm for your little one using shea butter, cocoa butter, palm kernel oil and some infused(herbal) oil e.g. neem. You can make a whole batch of this with a fraction of the amount you would need to spend if you had bought it off a fancy shop shelf. 2, Use safe ingredients and  puts you in control of what goes on your baby’s body. When you make your own baby skincare products , you are assured of using quality ingredients. You are also sure that the only ingredients you use are the ones you truly trust and like. You can remove and add ingredients that you either don’t like or really like into your products. 3, The possibility of starting a business from this. Most businesses start first as hobbies and eventually grow into a full enterprise. Making your own baby’s products, knowing what works and what doesn’t might eventually give you the confidence to start your own baby skincare line. 4, Enhances your knowledge in making infused oils, infusions and plant extracts. Since there are a lot of exceptions when it comes to ingredients that can actually be used in making baby skincare products, a lot of this is made up for, by incorporating infused herbal oils, floral water and teas etc. instead. So, learning how to make your own baby skincare products will sharpen your skills in this regard. 5, Beautiful, healthy glowing skin for your little one. As a result of all the lovely ingredients used, the evidence is that baby’s skin is smooth , clear and healthy. What better than this for a mom! Carrier oils and Essential oils

by nkechi @ Bare Skin Naturals

Carrier oils and essential oils are very common terminologies ususally encounterd by any one who is into aromatherapy or natural skincare. Basically carrier oils are plant oils derived from nuts, seeds, fruits or kernels of plants,  and processed either by the cold or hot process to produce oil. Essential oils can also be obtained from plant parts like carrier oils, but there could be instances where essential oils are obtained from non plant parts like resins etc. 3 Differences between Plant oils and Essentials oils Plant Oil Essential oil Does not Evaporate Volatile , so evaporates Leaves an oily mark on paper, because of their lubricating quality Does not leave any oily mark , although any colour present will leave a stain Not soluble in alcohol Soluble in alcohol  Can be used in proportions of up to  50% or more Usually used in very low proportions  below 2% in most cases Can be used  neat on the skin without dilution Mostly need to be diluted before application to skin .   Sometimes, unscrupulous suppliers mix essential oils with plant oils or adulterate them with other liquids, the above information can help give you a preliminary guide to ascertain the authenticity and quality of essential oils before buying

5 ways to handle acne

by nkechi @ Bare Skin Naturals

Acne is a stubborn skin disorder for many, and there are several ways to treat it. Here are five ways to prevent breakouts from occurring before they begin. 1. Control Oil Production Excess sebum can lead to open or closed comedones, papules and pustules, and in severe cases nodules and cysts. Hormones, particularly testosterone, are the source of excess sebum production. An increase in testosterone during puberty is one reason many teenage boys suffer from acne. Some people have medical conditions that can alter hormones and certain medications can cause an imbalance as well. If this is the case, the client will most likely be seen by a physician to try and get hormone levels under control. Stress can also have an effect on the balance of hormones—this will be discussed in lifestyle changes below. The best way to combat excess oil is by cleansing the skin twice a day with the appropriate cleanser for their skin type and keeping the skin well-hydrated. It is common practice of those with oily skin to automatically want to dry it out; what they don’t know is that drying out the skin actually triggers more oil production. The best way to combat excess oil is by cleansing the skin twice a day with the appropriate cleanser for their skin type and keeping the skin well-hydrated. Clients may feel that using any moisturizing agents will make the skin more oily, but it is important to maintain balance. The use of clay and/or charcoal masks http://bareskinnaturals.com/blog/activated-charcoal-unyi-in-skincare/ also help to absorb excess oil. Retinoids are also important to regulate sebum production. 2. Exfoliate Dead skin build-up is a contributing cause to acne; therefore, it is important to exfoliate the skin on a regular basis. Cleansers with alpha and/or beta hydroxy acids can be helpful for mild exfoliation as well as providing a thorough cleaning. Beta hydroxy acid is also commonly used in secondary products since it is attracted to oil and can help break down comedones by releasing dead cells that accumulate in the follicle. Other forms of exfoliation that can be performed at home are enzyme masks and physical scrubs, although those with inflamed skin should be cautious. The best way to get a deep exfoliation, for those prone to acne, is by getting professional chemical peels. There are several types of peels available including alpha hydroxy, beta hydroxy. Beta hydroxy, salicylic, is typically the peel of choice; 3. Fight Bacteria Bacteria is present on all skin types and conditions; p.acnes bacteria, in particular, is associated with acne breakouts. Bacteria breeds in dark sticky congested areas, such as the hair follicle that is blocked with sebum and dead skin. Once the bacteria starts to build in the follicle, this creates inflammation—that is why it is important to control oil and exfoliate in the first place. Anything that comes in contact with the skin should be clean including the hands. Fighting the bacteria would then be the next step. To prevent bacteria build-up on the skin, there are several things the client can do. First of all, anything that comes in contact with the skin should be clean including the hands. Most people tend to touch their face several times throughout the day without even thinking about it. In addition, phones can be full of bacteria and are held up to the face on a regular basis. Another commonly used item that can harbour bacteria is makeup brushes when not cleaned regularly. Changing pillow cases and sheets often can help to reduce bacteria as well. There are several ingredients that help fight bacteria. The two most commonly known are benzoyl peroxide and tea tree oil. These are commonly used in cleansers or as spot treatments. 4. Reduce Inflammation Inflammation can be caused by a multitude of things, but let’s focus on some of the most common. One major cause of inflammation is sun exposure—I know clients always say, “But it dries up the breakouts fast.” It is important to educate them on the harmful effects of the sun as a whole but focus on the negative effects on acne including drying out the skin too much resulting in more breakouts later. Any sort of friction can exacerbate or trigger a breakout by spreading bacteria or even cause hyperpigmentation. Other causes of inflammation include rubbing, picking and even occluding areas of the skin. Any sort of friction can exacerbate or trigger a breakout by spreading bacteria or even cause hyperpigmentation. Irritants including fabric softeners, perfumes and specific clothing materials can prompt breakouts. White cotton bedding and clothing are recommended, especially for those that are prone to breakouts on the body. 5. Make Lifestyle Changes A healthy lifestyle supports a healthy immune system. When the immune system is strong the entire body, including the skin, is able to fight off potentially harmful substances. Smoking, for instance, decreases blood circulation which delivers oxygen to the body including the skin.P.acnes are an anaerobic bacteria and cannot live in an oxygen-rich environment; therefore, proper circulation is essential to reduce acne breakouts. Exercise is another way to keep the blood circulating, as well as helping to reduce stress. It is equally important to learn how to manage stress, not just for the health of the skin but also for overall well-being. Diet also plays a role in healthy skin, eating foods high in Omegas, and reducing dairy has shown great benefit to those fighting acne. Sleep is something most people don’t think of when it comes to the skin, but during sleep is when the skin is able to repair itself.

Will this product make me dark?

by nkechi @ Bare Skin Naturals

As a natural skin care formulator and product manufacturer, I get asked this question quite often…. “I am fair in complexion, I hope this product will not make me get darker?” To answer this question, I would like to start this way…. Is it possible for skin to darken? Absolutely, Yes. No one maintains the same shade of color they are from birth over the years. This is as a result of exposure to environmental conditions and other factors like stress levels which make us appear darker. Melanin production by our skin is a defense mechanism of the skin to protect itself when exposed to the sun, which makes us darker. Can a skincare product cause the skin to darken? Again the answer is absolutely … Yes. Certain skincare products which contain photosensitive ingredients can make the skin darker if exposed to the sun. Examples include most lightening ingredients e.g. hydroquinone, AHA (alpha hydroxyl acids), Retinol, certain essential oils e.g. citrus based ones etc. It is always advisable to wear a sunscreen when using products that contain any photosensitive ingredient or stay away from direct sunshine. My skin is getting darker, but I am  using a natural product that has no photosensitive ingredients? Now each time I hear this, I ask some questions relating to the previous skincare products that the individual has been using… My discovery is that if you have been using skincare products that contain lightening ingredients, but suddenly make a wise decision to switch to natural and wholesome products, the effect of the lightening product will begin to diminish, and your skin will gradually begin to return to its natural skin tone. You will soon begin to notice clearer, richer and healthier skin tone and colour, well moisturized textured skin… that might not be as fair as before . I am using natural non lightening skin care products, how do I stop my skin from getting darker? The answer… Please get a good sunscreen and wear it daily. Sunscreens help to protect your skin from harsh effects of sun exposure which includes skin darkening. With daily use of sunscreen, you will observe clearer, brighter complexion. Wearing a sunscreen daily will most definitely obliterate the need for skin lighteners as it helps to protect your natural skin tone, helps with hyperpigmentation and helps to give a more even skin color. Finally,  I just want to add that no matter what your skin color or tone. if you take care of it and protect it from harsh weather conditions, use the right skincare products , eat and sleep well, you will see that there is absolutely no need to even imagine to change your skin color. Every skin color is beautiful !

The “baddies” in natural skincare formulation

by nkechi @ Bare Skin Naturals

In order to regulate the ingredients used for formulating personal care products, there are several agencies set up by different countries, organisations, NGOs and regions to determine what is safe to use in formulation and in what quantity it can be safely used. The FDA (food and drug administration) and the EU list of regulations are the most common and more widely accepted world wide (depending what part of the world you are in). Here in Nigeria, the agency governing and regulating the use and manufacture of personal skincare ingredients is known as NAFDAC (National agency for food and drug administration and control). Most ingredients are banned for use in personal skincare because of proven negative health effects associated with such ingredients, however, some ingredients are banned just because certain bodies , NGOs or uninformed bloggers have managed to create a bad reputation for that particular ingredient without any scientific proof. Preservatives Pretty much all formulas need preservatives, but lots of cosmetic marketers want to use the phrase “preservative free.” This puts formulators in a bind. Also, since preservatives are meant to kill cells, it’s not surprising high levels can have negative side effects. Baddies Parabens, Formaldehyde donors, and Methylisothiazolinones – have developed such poor reputations that many formulators just avoid them. Even an ingredient like Phenoxyethanol is viewed negatively among some consumer groups. Goodies Some formulators have had success using organic acids and their salts: Benzoic Acid, Sorbic Acid, Potassium Sorbate or Sodium Benzoate. Benzyl Alcohol and Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate are other options. These aren’t nearly as easy or effective to work with, but they can work in some systems. 2. Surfactants Surfactants are the most widely used functional ingredients in cosmetics but some of them have developed poor reputations. Unfortunately, this includes some of the most effective and versatile ingredients. Baddies Some consumers would prefer to avoid Sulfates like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Also, you may want to stay away from diethanolamines like Lauramide DEA or Cocamide DEA. Goodies Finding surfactants that don’t include the word “sulfate” or have an “-eth” in its name is one option for formulators. Betaines can be a good substitute for diethanolamines. Expect your formulas to be more expense and not work as well, but consumers may be more inclined to buy them 3. Conditioning Ingredients Since a number of the best conditioning ingredients come from synthetic chemistry and the petroleum industry, they have naturally developed a bad reputation. Baddies This includes ingredients like Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, and Propylene Glycol. Silicones also get swept up in this anti-man-made ingredient furor, so Dimethicone and Cyclomethicone are not good replacements. Goodies Alternatives for these ingredients include materials derived from plants like natural oils, butters and waxes. 4. Talc Talc (hydrous magnesium silicate) is a powdered ingredient used in cosmetics to absorb moisture and as a filler. The primary concern about talc is that it is linked to ovarian cancer. This is based on a study published during the 1990s. Subsequent reviews of all the available data has demonstrated that talc is safe when used as directed. However, science doesn’t always matter, as demonstrated by the fact that cosmetic companies have recently lost a few high-profile court cases related to talc. Goodies Some alternatives to talc include Corn starch, Tapioca Starch, Oat Flour and perhaps Baking Soda. They won’t work for all talc formulas but they are worth a shot. 5. Fragrances We add fragrance to cosmetics to make products smell better or to reinforce a marketing story. Cosmetics without fragrance just don’t sell as well. Unfortunately, some groups have convinced consumers all fragrances are awful. Baddies Synthetic fragrance Goddies Essential oils You can make some of your formulas without fragrance but they won’t be as well-liked by most consumers as fragrance-containing alternatives. 6.Colour pigments Without colorants, most cosmetic formulas would be yellow or brown. Colour cosmetics would not exist. Some groups have declared that artificial colorants are carcinogenic. As usual, this claim is not supported by science. In fact, of all the ingredients in cosmetics, colorants are the most highly regulated. Each batch of colorant must be approved by FDA prior to use. FDA also monitors the safety of colorants. Any colour additive that is found to cause cancer in animals (or humans) may not be used in cosmetics. That means the alternatives to colour your products are strictly limited. You may be able to find some natural extracts that impart colour but remember if the purpose of adding an ingredient is for colour, then you are only allowed to use approved colorants from the FDA or EU.

Barenaturals, making a difference in the world with their natural organic products for bath body and home In the early days While still studying as a student midwife, one of her research projects involved studying the effects chemicals (in particular Endocrine Disruptors) used in skincare and cosmetics products that have an effect on the unborn embryo. Through her research, Darcey saw some disturbing effects with these Endocrine Disruptors that are still used in many skincare products. Endocrine Disruptors are chemicals that mimic natural hormones within the body that can interfere or even block the way the body's natural hormones are controlled. They can have a drastic effect not just on adults and children but as Darcey saw on unborn embryos. This can create a false reaction that can cause further problems in other areas of the body that can do more harm than good. Lightening agents commonly used in natural skincare

by nkechi @ Bare Skin Naturals

I went to a very famous market in lagos recently called balogun market, and amidst all the hustle, bustle and jostling of activities that seemed to be a constant feature, as well as the amazingly wide array of goods and products available for purchase in the market. I could also notice the unnaturally “yellow” tone on most of the women I met there. I say “unnatural” because the “yellowing” is not uniform all over the body, but seems to be more concentrated on the face while the other parts of the body seemed significantly darker. I suspect that these women are victims (knowingly or unknowingly) of the various cheap and grossly unhealthy, mostly imported skincare products that have in them a high levels of hydroquinone or mercury compounds which, even thought they lighten the skin, do have very undesirable side effects on the human body both externally and internally when used over a prolonged period of time. In previous post here:http://bareskinnaturals.com/blog/so-you-want-to-have-a-lighter-skin-colour/ I had mentioned a few natural skinlighteners. and I just feel the need to metion them one more time, in detail. So if you must lighten your skin! At least be informed about the fact that there are healthier more natural options out there and make the effort to ask for the full list of ingredients in the products you are buying or read the ingredient list where provided to ensure that you know exactly what you are buying. .   Natural skin lighteners Vitamin c This is more like a skin brightener than a lightener. Skin brighteners will make your natural complexion brighter and healthier, as well as glowing, whereas skin lighteners will make your natural complexion one or more shades lighter than your natural skin tone. Vitamin c brightens the complexion by slowing down hyperactive melanocytes ( specialised skin cell that produces the protective skin-darkening pigment melanin) hence reducing skin darkening. Vitamin c not only brightens the complexion but also plays an important role in the production of collagen fibres that help to support skin and keep it firm. 2.     Kojic acid White crystalline powder derived from a fungus in Asia. It is usually used as a natural alternative to hydroquinone. It works by inhibiting the function of the tyrosinase. The tyrosinase is responsible for the first step in the production of melanin, therefore by inhibiting the function of the tyrosinase, the melanocyts are not able to produce enough melanin and hence the skin gets lighter. Kojic acid is also an antioxidant and suitable for sun damaged and sensitive skin. 3.   Liquorice Extract The liquorice plant is a legume and the juice derived from its roots is useful for treating all kinds of skin ailments. The compound glabridim in liquorice is found to absorb UVA&UVB rays and act as a powerful skin whitening agent. Liquorice works the same way as kojic acid by inhibiting the activity of the tyrosinase enzyme by as much as 50% without damaging skin cells. It is also useful for in the treatment of post inflammatory hyperpigmentataion as well as reverse acne scars. It can also help to soothe skin and reduce redness. 4.  Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) Niacinamides role as a coenzyme precursor may explain the multiple roles it has in skin. Topical niacinamide in skin is described to have severeal functions on aging skin, incuding improved skin barrier, hypergimentation, redness, fine lines etc. Additionally, nicinamide inflences skin pigmentation by down regulating the transfer of the melanosomes from the melanocytes to the keratinocytes (without inhibiting tyrosinase activity or cell proliferation) by 35 to 68%. 5.  Arbutin A potent antioxidant that is found naturally in cranberries, wheat, pears and bearberry leaves. It works by inhibiting the activity of the tyrosinase, inhibiting the melanosome maturation and finally, converts to hydroquinone in the skin, thereby allowing for a controlled release, hence resulting in less irritation. 6.  Azelaic acid Naturally sourced from cultures of grain products, casotor beans or by the oxygenation of oleic acid found in milk. Azelaic acid selectively lightens skin where excessively active melanocytes are found 7.   Lactic acid Derived from sour milk and sugars. Works as a moisturiser and antimicrobial agent. works by increasing the exfoliation of melanin filled keratinocytes and suppresses the formation of tyrosnase. 8.   Mulberry root extract A potent antioxidant and anti inflammatory agent that inhibits L-DOPA oxidase activity of tyrosinase. Studies show a 50% reduction in tyrosinase activity following application. 9.   Phenylethyl rescorcinol Works by inhibiting conversion of tyrosinase to L-DOPA 10.  Retinoids (vitamin A) Stimulates collagen production, elastin and glycosaminoglycan production and inhibits tyrosinase activity as well as enhances the penetration of actives through the stratum corneum. 11.   Undecylenoyl Phenylalanine 12.  Cucumber Lightens dark circes under eyes, but can also lighten other areas. extract is called phenylanin and interfers with transfer of melanin to cells.
