Am I Allergic to Bare Minerals? Here's How to Tell. | Alpha Mom

Alpha Mom

Amy, I have been reading your blogs on and off for a lot of years now. Sometimes I get a little too addicted to the Internet and have to make myself stop for a while. But I always come back. :) Anyway, I have a question. It's sort of time sensitive since it involves whether or not I am having a makeup reaction and should stop using it before my face falls off (but I know you receive zillions of e-mails and might not be able to respond right away--just thought it wouldn't hurt to try asking you). I just recently purchased the Bare Minerals starter kit because I wanted something very light and natural. Confession: I am mostly a makeup virgin. Ok, I have worn it before. I have some makeup that I break out for special occasions. But no one ever really taught me how to use it well, and I never felt like I needed it. Now, I still don't think I NEED it, but I have had makeup done on me (by salons, at Mary Kay parties, and so on), and I've seen how a nice, simple "routine" can make me look

Tips for Long lasting makeup for oily and greasy skin

by Ricky @ Ricky's Beauty Guide

Having oily or greasy skin does not necessarily mean that you should no longer wear makeup. While it’s true that you may have a hard time making it last long if you have greasy skin, there is no need to let go of your desire to wear makeup to look even better. Note that you can retain it by knowing exactly which one specifically works for your skin type. The following tips to make your makeup last long despite having greasy skin can also help: Use a primer – With the help of a primer, it would be much easier

Weekend Reading: You’re Drinking Plastic Right Now

by Alden Wicker @ Ecocult

Hi readers! I’m back from my much-needed, two-week hiatus from the internet. Burning Man was out of this world incredible this year. (I’ll be sharing my ethically-made outfits next week.) I ran into Jovana Djuric, a sustainable jewelry designer, at a camp called 1001 Nights, and we spent some quality time together. I also got a foot massage, had my dream written down and put inside a little jar with playa dust, left a letter for another mystery Burner and picked one out myself from a chest, was fed fresh watermelon, discussed Israel and Middle East conflict with a Swiss-Armenian…and that was in a couple hours at one camp! Multiply that by a whole week and you might understand my overabundance of gratitude. I shared my thoughts on Instagram, however, concerning the man who ran into the burning man, and why Burning Man can be really difficult. It has been for me in the past. Ironically, I saw Ingrid Goes West in Denver before I went offline. It’s a dark comedy about Instagram influencers, and it was disturbingly accurate. This article articulates my thoughts perfectly. Before I left, I wrote this piece for Fast Company Ideas about how fashion is destroying the […]

Productivity Hack: Slowing Down to Speed Up

by Jules @ Om & The City

If you’re looking for a sign that you need to slow down and reconnect, this is it. After traveling around Bali for the past 14 days, the biggest thing I’ve noticed is how relaxed and happy everyone is here. I never felt rushed by anyone to do anything – whether it be paying for a delicious meal, taking in a scenic view, or stopping to ask a stranger for directions. Everyone has time or makes time. And if we run out of time, they just say “no worries” and we all move on. So, this post is for the multi-taskers, the freelancers, the entrepreneurs, the bloggers and for anyone who wants to slow down, be present, work smart, show results, and live a full and beautiful life. My trip has reminded me how much I wish to declutter my own life and simplify my mentality for a more focused and productive life. The below thoughts are what I’m currently working on – join me? 1. Actually, taste your food. The first thing we can all do is eat more slowly. Take the time to be present, make a healthy breakfast, sit down and taste it. Put the phone away. Surely, not every meal needs to be documented for Instagram. Taste each bite, so you can actually appreciate what you […]

Green Beauty Review: Simple and Nourishing Beauty Is What I Need Right Now

by Catherine Harper @ Ecocult

Minimalism is one of those trends that may prove to be truly evergreen. With the hustle of modern life and the instability of the current political climate, it’s refreshing to find products that are simply made and easy to use. Kaliks Collective, a brand of handcrafted, small batch skincare, truly exemplifies the basic tenets of minimalism. The story behind Kaliks Collective is familiar: founder Allison Hodge suffered from skin issues for many years and, unable to find products to soothe her own skin, she began learning to make her own. Research is at the core of Kaliks Collective’s philosophy, and Allison studied functional medicine and herbs while earning certifications as a Western Herbalist and a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. She is currently working to earn a diploma in Organic Skincare Formulation. This dedication to the science behind the ingredients is evident within her products, as each is carefully formulated with with no more than 12 ingredients that offer medicinal and healing effects. As someone with sensitive skin, I was fortunate to try all four of Kaliks Collective’s products, and each item is gentle and soothing. Why Having More Fun Makes You More Successful

by Jules @ Om & The City

I believe in having as much fun as possible. I also believe in hard-freeeakin-work. You need both to harness true success. Consider it the yin and the yang – it’s how we keep balance in the world, in our circles, and most importantly, in ourselves. My Alter-Ego Before my blog started to break out of its cocoon, I spent most of my spare time singing and writing songs on my keyboard. I also read a ridiculous amount of comic books (I’m a sci-fi nerd). I suppose that’s my alter-ego. Now that I’ve turned my blog into a full-time job, I’ve traded out my music and comics for self-help books and entrepreneurial podcasts. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE self-help books and podcasts, and I enjoy continuously feeding my brain with nutrients. While I am VERY grateful to be able to do what I do for a living, I realize the work never truly stops. It’s good, because it’s work I enjoy hence I could do it all day and night without blinking an eye. It’s not so good, because I rarely give my brain that much-needed siesta. Why you need to have more fun… 1. A mental reset to avoid utter burnout It doesn’t matter if you’re living your dreams, everyone […]

Breaking Down the Ingredients: Bare Minerals Foundation - Om & The City

Om & The City

I have been asked by a few people what kind of makeup I use. Let me just say, it is not an easy task to find “natural” makeup that actually looks nice or isn’t ridiculously expensive. My main goal is to use products that have very few ingredients. It is also important for me to know what each ingredient is. While this is a daunting task, I believe it is worth researching. These days I keep my makeup routine fairly simple. It is crazy how much makeup I used to wear in high school…I suppose that was the time I felt less secure with my natural beauty. Now that I am graduated from college and working in the “real world”, I don’t feel like I necessarily NEED makeup to feel attractive. For foundation, I use Bare Minerals MATTE formula: ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Titanium Dioxide – It is a controversial ingredient used to protect skin from ultraviolet sunlight. This inorganic compound has received mixed reviews due to the risk of lung damage if inhaled. Personally, I think protecting your skin from the sun is way more important, and this is one of the best ingredients to do the job. Titanium dioxide protects …

How I Keep My Skin Healthy When I Travel

by Jules @ Om & The City

It’s halfway through the year, and I’ve been quite the lil globe trotter. Since January, I’ve traveled to Kentucky (my hometown!), San Francisco, Bali (read my travel guide here), and just recently Portland for a work trip. I have several more trips planned (and unplanned) through the rest of the year, so I can’t wait to share more on that later. You guys know I love traveling, but one tricky thing to manage is skincare. When you fly, you’re exposed to a lot of different germs and climates, so my skin and overall body tends to take a hit – especially when I’m off my normal routine. Since I’ve traveled so much this year, I’ve learned a lot about what my skin LOVES… and that’s oil. Every day and night. Introducing: 100% Squalane Oil from Biossance Our bodies naturally produce a version of Squalane, but the amount we make and retain decreases overtime. Squalane originated as a staple in the Korean beauty market (shoutout to my hapas out there!), but it was harvested from shark livers (eeeeek). Thankfully today, scientists are able to create a 100% plant-based Squalane that is sustainably derived from sugarcane. Why Squalane? Beyond the fact that it’s anti-aging, it’s incredibly healthy for your skin. It’s a very potent antioxidant […]

Bare Minerals evangelists are obsessed with the company because of its powder makeup that suggests consumers use a mildly hilarious "swirl, tap, buff" technique. But now, the company has gone into dangerous territory by deciding to sell (dun dun dunnn) liquid foundation.

Versatility, Style, & Function: 1 Outfit, 3 Ways

by nataliecomstock@gmail.com @ Natalie Dressed :: A Santa Cruz Life + Style Blog

If you follow me on Instagram, you know my already casual style has only gotten more casual and functional since becoming a mom. There are plenty of days when I end up in workout clothes for most of the day (even though I honestly haven’t been working out much lately) or jeans and t-shirt. Day-to-day comfort and function are key so I’m always trying to find pieces that fit those two criteria but are also

11 best mineral foundations

11 best mineral foundations

The Independent

Since American brand bareMinerals first entered the cosmetic-consciousness on daytime telly infomercials, hoards of women have been taking to the internet and effusing to friends and family, sharing their stories of “conversion”. In theory, mineral foundations are great: natural, non-comedogenic and potentially problem-solving for sensitive or break-out prone skin. But they’re also super-noticeable when they’re wrong: cakey, drying and accentuating pores, fine lines and flakey patches – and downright messy to apply.

9 easy to follow tips for great skin this summer

by Ricky @ Ricky's Beauty Guide

Summer is the most-awaited time of the year, probably next only to Christmas and New Year. It’s the time when families can go on week-long trips thanks to the lengthy school vacation. Even adults schedule their year around summer. How to Care for a Pug

How to Care for a Pug

by @ How to of the Day

Pugs are a friendly and goofy dog breed that love attention almost as much as people love their folded-up faces. Those folds need special care, though, to keep your pug happy and healthy. Create a consistent routine of meals, play time, and quiet time for your pug, and make sure you provide them with regular fold cleanings, ear cleanings, nail trims, and baths. It can take a little extra work, but with some attention you can care for all of your pug’s unique needs.

5 Tips to Stop Procrastinating on Your Dreams

by Jules @ Om & The City

Hi Babes. This is important, so listen up. Stop procrastinating on your dreams. I read a lot of comments from people saying they wish they could do this or that, but they can’t because this or that. Nope. I won’t let you make excuses, because what you want matters. How you decide to spend your time, and ultimately, YOUR LIFE, matters. So, stop letting your dreams take the backseat. So, let’s hear some of the biggest reasons people procrastinate in the first place: I’m worried I won’t make enough money. I just can’t find the time to focus on it. I’m scared to leave behind my steady job. I’m scared I’ll fail. Yes, these are all legit worries. But, plenty of people are out there taking risks and killing the game, so who’s to say that can’t be you too? I’m not a stranger to the battle between the head and the heart. I’m very much a hybrid Type A / Type B personality. One side of me is logistical, analytical, and meticulous as all get out… but the other side of me is flying by the seat of my pants, taking big risks, and not looking back. Beauty Review: Is Everyday Minerals a Non-Toxic and Eco-Friendly Alternative to bareMinerals? - Ecocult

Beauty Review: Is Everyday Minerals a Non-Toxic and Eco-Friendly Alternative to bareMinerals? - Ecocult

Ecocult

Last month when I was wandering the floor at Natural Products Expo West, I stopped by a booth for a makeup company called Everyday Minerals. I was curious, because I’ve been using bareMinerals for some time, and had an inkling I should find a replacement. bareMinerals isn’t so toxic, but I feel like there is always room for improvement, right? Sign Up for EcoCult’s Newsletter The very nice girl working the booth told me that Everyday Minerals is indeed less toxic than bareMinerals, and that her skin had actually cleared up after she made the switch. Intrigued, I took home some samples to try for myself. Here’s what I found: The Price Everyday Minerals is very much cheaper than bareMinerals. For example, BM’s concealer costs $18 while EDM’s costs $9. However, it might be worth paying for the built-in SPF broad spectrum protection you get in bareMinerals products. Winner: Everyday Minerals by a mile The Look When I tried on Everyday Minerals, I felt that I had a healthier, more fresh and shimmery glow. And their concealer gave me as much coverage over blemishes and under-eye circles, without the heavy, powdery look. Winner: Everyday Minerals The Ingredients As far as ingredients, let’s start …

The one thing you learn pretty quickly when giving birth is that you are not in control. Going into labor, like most people, Seth and I had an idea of how we wanted things to go. I wanted to have a natural labor, meaning a vaginal delivery and no pain medication. Having a doula for a cousin and being surrounded by many moms, both vets and rookies, we listened to their advice and viewed our
