Managing horse nutrition through changing seasons

by mitchellpryde@yahoo.com.au @ Fact Sheets for Horses and Equine | Pryde's EasiFeed - Pryde's EasiFeed | Horse Feed, Supplement and Equine Nutrition

Managing horses nutrition through changing seasons is a concept that is important for all horses! What is the trick? It's being able to change how much you are feeding to control body fatness and behaviour as pasture quality changes WITHOUT causing mineral deficiencies in the diet. There are two main ways you can do this: 1:53 Feed a balancer pellet (eg Pryde's 150 pellet) together with 'energy feeds' like oats or Pryde's PowerPak, keeping the amount of Balancer Pellet constant while adjusting the amount of oats/PowerPak being fed according to pasture conditions and your horse's requirement for additional calories. or 2:57 The 'Sliding Scale' concept. Using a feed (eg EasiResult) together with a concentrated 'Balancer Pellet' (eg Pryde's 150 Pellet) and adjust the amounts of both according to pasture conditions and your horse's requirements.

How to nutritionally manage horses with laminitis?

by mitchellpryde@yahoo.com.au @ Fact Sheets for Horses and Equine | Pryde's EasiFeed - Pryde's EasiFeed | Horse Feed, Supplement and Equine Nutrition

Managing horses nutritionally with laminitis can be quite tricky. Here are some points to remember when doing so.

00:12 Always base the diet on forages (pastures or hay).
00:16 Feed forages with less than 12% non-structural carbohydrates (NSC).
01:09 If your horse is very sensitive or you have hay with a higher level of NSC soaking the hay will reduce the amount of NSC in the hay making it safer to feed.
02:28 Don't allow horses with active laminitis to graze.
03:15 If grazing is to be provided, only graze in the very early hours of the morning. Have horse's off pasture by 2 hours after sunrise in high risk periods.
04:21 Use a grazing muzzle to reduce pasture intake.
05:27 It is important to feed a balanced diet. Use a low dose rate vitamin and mineral supplement to meet vitamin and mineral requirements
5:45 Use low NSC, grain free feeds/ingredients where additional calories are required (for example Pryde's EasiSport and Pryde's EasiFibre).

Electrolyte replacement for your horse - how to use it

by mitchellpryde@yahoo.com.au @ Fact Sheets for Horses and Equine | Pryde's EasiFeed - Pryde's EasiFeed | Horse Feed, Supplement and Equine Nutrition

Electrolytes are the minerals a horse loses in its sweat after intensive work. Some of the main ways to replenish electrolytes lost are: - make sure the daily diet is meeting requirements for electrolytes - provide free access to plain salt (sodium, chloride, NaCl) - feed plenty of forage (a rich source of potassium and magnesium) - use a quality electrolyte supplement on days when sweat losses are highest (especially during hot, humid weather) - if you are adding salt and electrolytes to your horse's feed and he stops eating, it could be because you are exceeding his requirement for these minerals which makes the feed taste horrible. Reduce or remove them for a few days until his appetite returns and then slowly reintroduce them.

Dietary Management with PSSM in horses

by mitchellpryde@yahoo.com.au @ Fact Sheets for Horses and Equine | Pryde's EasiFeed - Pryde's EasiFeed | Horse Feed, Supplement and Equine Nutrition

Dietary management with PSSM in horses is very important to understand. Reducing the amount of starch and sugar in the diet of horse's with PSSM is the most effective way to stop episodes of tying-up. To do this - Use low sugar, low starch forages as the base of the diet. Do not feed any cereal grain or grain by-product (wheat, oats, barley, corn, rice, sorghum, triticale, rye, and by-products like pollard and bran) Use additional oil and high energy fibres to add additional calories to the diet when needed. Make sure all vitamin and mineral requirements are met, paying particular attention to selenium, vitamin E and the electrolyte minerals (sodium, chloride and potassium)

Six Steps to Feeding a Pregnant Mare

Six Steps to Feeding a Pregnant Mare

Equinews

Choosing to breed a mare involves a multitude of decisions, some that require protracted thought (“What stallion should I choose?”) and others that can be made almost instantly (“Who will foal out the mare? Me, of course!”). Providing adequate nutrition for the mare as she transitions from one trimester to the next need not be difficult. Use the following six guidelines to stay on track, helping to ensure the delivery of a healthy, nutritionally robust foal.

How to feed your horse in Winter

by mitchellpryde@yahoo.com.au @ Fact Sheets for Horses and Equine | Pryde's EasiFeed - Pryde's EasiFeed | Horse Feed, Supplement and Equine Nutrition

Horses often lose weight in winter for the simple reason that when it is cold they burn more calories to maintain body temperature, therefore calorie requirements are higher during this period. Some simple solutions could be: - feeding additional fibre as hay helps to keep horses warm as fibre fermentation produces heat and increases calorie intake. - if your horse can't maintain weight on additional forage you may need to introduce some higher calorie feeds into the diet. Pryde'sBioMare Cubes would be an example of this. - rugging your horse during this period. This reduces the amount of calories a horse needs to burn to stay warm and reduces calorie requirements. - Don't be afraid to let horses lose some weight in winter! Some horses, especially those that get very fat during spring and summer can benefit from losing weight in winter.
