Breaking Down the Ingredients: Bare Minerals Foundation - Om & The City

Breaking Down the Ingredients: Bare Minerals Foundation - Om & The City

Om & The City

I have been asked by a few people what kind of makeup I use. Let me just say, it is not an easy task to find “natural” makeup that actually looks nice or isn’t ridiculously expensive. My main goal is to use products that have very few ingredients. It is also important for me to know what each ingredient is. While this is a daunting task, I believe it is worth researching. These days I keep my makeup routine fairly simple. It is crazy how much makeup I used to wear in high school…I suppose that was the time I felt less secure with my natural beauty. Now that I am graduated from college and working in the “real world”, I don’t feel like I necessarily NEED makeup to feel attractive. For foundation, I use Bare Minerals MATTE formula: ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Titanium Dioxide – It is a controversial ingredient used to protect skin from ultraviolet sunlight. This inorganic compound has received mixed reviews due to the risk of lung damage if inhaled. Personally, I think protecting your skin from the sun is way more important, and this is one of the best ingredients to do the job. Titanium dioxide protects …

What to Wear to a Fall Wedding

What to Wear to a Fall Wedding

by Jessica @ bows & sequins

I still can’t believe we’re holding on to such warm temperatures when October is less than a week away! You’ll never catch me complaining about getting to spend the weekend on a boat in late September, that’s for sure. I will say, though, getting dressed has been a little bit of a challenge. I’m ready to retire a lot of my summer clothes and it’s way too hot to wear most of my new pieces for fall, but I just keep telling myself, “Enjoy this while it lasts. You’ll be begging for warm weather come February.” I wore this pink lace midi dress to a wedding in Malibu in July and was planning on re-wearing it to a wedding here in Chicago two weeks ago....

Productivity Hack: Slowing Down to Speed Up

by Jules @ Om & The City

If you’re looking for a sign that you need to slow down and reconnect, this is it. After traveling around Bali for the past 14 days, the biggest thing I’ve noticed is how relaxed and happy everyone is here. I never felt rushed by anyone to do anything – whether it be paying for a delicious meal, taking in a scenic view, or stopping to ask a stranger for directions. Everyone has time or makes time. And if we run out of time, they just say “no worries” and we all move on. So, this post is for the multi-taskers, the freelancers, the entrepreneurs, the bloggers and for anyone who wants to slow down, be present, work smart, show results, and live a full and beautiful life. My trip has reminded me how much I wish to declutter my own life and simplify my mentality for a more focused and productive life. The below thoughts are what I’m currently working on – join me? 1. Actually, taste your food. The first thing we can all do is eat more slowly. Take the time to be present, make a healthy breakfast, sit down and taste it. Put the phone away. Surely, not every meal needs to be documented for Instagram. Taste each bite, so you can actually appreciate what you […]

Why Having More Fun Makes You More Successful

by Jules @ Om & The City

I believe in having as much fun as possible. I also believe in hard-freeeakin-work. You need both to harness true success. Consider it the yin and the yang – it’s how we keep balance in the world, in our circles, and most importantly, in ourselves. My Alter-Ego Before my blog started to break out of its cocoon, I spent most of my spare time singing and writing songs on my keyboard. I also read a ridiculous amount of comic books (I’m a sci-fi nerd). I suppose that’s my alter-ego. Now that I’ve turned my blog into a full-time job, I’ve traded out my music and comics for self-help books and entrepreneurial podcasts. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE self-help books and podcasts, and I enjoy continuously feeding my brain with nutrients. While I am VERY grateful to be able to do what I do for a living, I realize the work never truly stops. It’s good, because it’s work I enjoy hence I could do it all day and night without blinking an eye. It’s not so good, because I rarely give my brain that much-needed siesta. Why you need to have more fun… 1. A mental reset to avoid utter burnout It doesn’t matter if you’re living your dreams, everyone […]

How I Keep My Skin Healthy When I Travel

by Jules @ Om & The City

It’s halfway through the year, and I’ve been quite the lil globe trotter. Since January, I’ve traveled to Kentucky (my hometown!), San Francisco, Bali (read my travel guide here), and just recently Portland for a work trip. I have several more trips planned (and unplanned) through the rest of the year, so I can’t wait to share more on that later. You guys know I love traveling, but one tricky thing to manage is skincare. When you fly, you’re exposed to a lot of different germs and climates, so my skin and overall body tends to take a hit – especially when I’m off my normal routine. Since I’ve traveled so much this year, I’ve learned a lot about what my skin LOVES… and that’s oil. Every day and night. Introducing: 100% Squalane Oil from Biossance Our bodies naturally produce a version of Squalane, but the amount we make and retain decreases overtime. Squalane originated as a staple in the Korean beauty market (shoutout to my hapas out there!), but it was harvested from shark livers (eeeeek). Thankfully today, scientists are able to create a 100% plant-based Squalane that is sustainably derived from sugarcane. Why Squalane? Beyond the fact that it’s anti-aging, it’s incredibly healthy for your skin. It’s a very potent antioxidant […]

I’ve gotten to the point where I understand my skin so much more and am finally picking the correct products for my skin type. Turns out, my skin is actually pretty dry, but I’m prone to breakouts, too. So for years, I was using harsh anti-acne products that were stripping my skin dry, which was making my skin actually produce more oil and adding to the problem. Not good. 5 Tips to Stop Procrastinating on Your Dreams

by Jules @ Om & The City

Hi Babes. This is important, so listen up. Stop procrastinating on your dreams. I read a lot of comments from people saying they wish they could do this or that, but they can’t because this or that. Nope. I won’t let you make excuses, because what you want matters. How you decide to spend your time, and ultimately, YOUR LIFE, matters. So, stop letting your dreams take the backseat. So, let’s hear some of the biggest reasons people procrastinate in the first place: I’m worried I won’t make enough money. I just can’t find the time to focus on it. I’m scared to leave behind my steady job. I’m scared I’ll fail. Yes, these are all legit worries. But, plenty of people are out there taking risks and killing the game, so who’s to say that can’t be you too? I’m not a stranger to the battle between the head and the heart. I’m very much a hybrid Type A / Type B personality. One side of me is logistical, analytical, and meticulous as all get out… but the other side of me is flying by the seat of my pants, taking big risks, and not looking back. Amy, I have been reading your blogs on and off for a lot of years now. Sometimes I get a little too addicted to the Internet and have to make myself stop for a while. But I always come back. :) Anyway, I have a question. It's sort of time sensitive since it involves whether or not I am having a makeup reaction and should stop using it before my face falls off (but I know you receive zillions of e-mails and might not be able to respond right away--just thought it wouldn't hurt to try asking you). I just recently purchased the Bare Minerals starter kit because I wanted something very light and natural. Confession: I am mostly a makeup virgin. Ok, I have worn it before. I have some makeup that I break out for special occasions. But no one ever really taught me how to use it well, and I never felt like I needed it. Now, I still don't think I NEED it, but I have had makeup done on me (by salons, at Mary Kay parties, and so on), and I've seen how a nice, simple "routine" can make me look

Making food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner is exhausting (especially if you’re an indecisive Libra like moi). By utilizing Sunday as a day of rest and a day of prep, you’re setting yourself up for a week full of healthy decisions. HOW TO DO IT: Cook your grains, veggies, and proteins in bulk, and mince your garlic and herbs all at once. Store everything separately in containers. You’ll cut down your time significantly, and all you’ll need to do is throw it all in and heat it up in a few minutes. *Andrew and I are actually looking to join a food co-op in our neighborhood, so we can support local farmers, volunteer in the community, and get fresh and healthy […]

by Ricky @ Ricky's Beauty Guide

Note that you can retain it by knowing exactly which one specifically works for your skin type. The following tips to make your makeup last long despite having greasy skin can also help: Use a primer – With the help of a primer, it would be much easier

How to Go to Bed After Watching a Horror Movie

by @ How to of the Day

Watching horror movies can sometimes lead to a person feeling frightened and unable to sleep. If you’re frightened or anxious after watching a horror movie, you can face your fears by acknowledging and talking about what frightens you. You can think about your fears logically and work to overcome them. Another thing you can try is to distract yourself from your fears by watching or reading something funny, doing an activity that requires focus, or participating in a calming activity. You can also make yourself and your bedroom as comfortable as possible to help you fall asleep.

How to Treat Diarrhea in Cockatiels

How to Treat Diarrhea in Cockatiels

by @ How to of the Day

If your cockatiel is sick, it's important to spot the sickness right away. In the case of diarrhea, this can be hard to spot in birds. Their droppings are naturally runny, as they contain both feces and urine together, so gauging when it is unhealthy can be hard. However, by assessing their droppings on a regular basis, looking for other signs of illness, and getting them proper veterinary care, you can quickly and effectively treat diarrhea and its underlying causes in cockatiels.

Treatment For Facial Redness Due To Rosacea

by Ricky @ Ricky's Beauty Guide

Do you know anyone who blushes easily? Does this happen only when that person is embarrassed or stressed, or does it seem like an almost permanent flush on his skin? If it is the latter, do that person a favor and ask if he has heard of rosacea. Rosacea: Not a Simple Blush Rosacea is a common skin disorder, but it has to be distinguished from the typical frequent blushing. People who tend to blush easily need not assume the worst, but it will certainly be to their advantage if they keep an eye out for signs of rosacea. It

7 Tips for Throwing a Pool Party

7 Tips for Throwing a Pool Party

by Jessica @ bows & sequins

I can hardly believe that Labor Day weekend has come and gone! Where did the season go?! I was very mindful to savor every single second of summer, but it’s still so bittersweet to see it on it’s way out. (Actually, there’s really nothing sweet. Just bitter, tbh.) Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, though… Fall doesn’t technically start until later this week, but seeing as this last weekend was GORGEOUS in Chicago and the forecast is looking pretty promising, maybe we’ll get lucky enough for another pool weekend or two? Here’s to wishful thinking! (And FYI: There’s a pretty epic discount code at the end of this post, so be sure to take advantage!) I’ve mentioned summer entertaining a few times over the past...

My Golden Birthday: The Past 26 Years + How I Got Here

by Jules @ Om & The City

Been waiting 26 years to turn 26 on September 26th! WOO, I MADE IT. Also, ironically enough as I’m writing this (technically wrote this yesterday), it is 8:26am and I currently have 26 unread emails. Coincidence? Haha… I don’t know what to say, except that I feel incredibly grateful. It has proven time and time again that everything in my life happened for a reason and has led me to this present moment. So, I want to walk you through a pretty personal timeline that really shows how much of my path was a result of two significant beings in my life: Andrew + my blog, Om & The City. For anyone who has ever asked about how Andrew and I met, you’ll see just how significant a role he has played throughout the last 13+ years of my life. Years 2004-2008: The Story of How Andrew and I Met I met Andrew at a football game in 8th grade, and we started chatting on AIM (my screen name was lovedogs91), which quickly developed into a huge crush on both sides. He burned me a CD with Goldfinger, and I burned him a CD with Phantom of the Opera. Then, he invited me to go to youth group with him. I […]
